Progress Update - Mtwara and Lindi

Visit to Mtwara – Mikindani Masjid & Imambargha

On 7th January 2026, the Chairman of the AFED Housing Board, Alhaj Akil Hirji, visited Mtwara together with Project Coordinator Br. Mohamed Moledina to inspect the ongoing renovation works at Mikindani Masjid and Imambargha.

The renovation works were initially scheduled to commence in October 2025; however, due to logistical challenges, particularly in transporting materials to Mtwara, the works officially began on 12th December 2025. A team of skilled technicians was deployed from Dar es Salaam to undertake the project.

Alhamdulillah, the renovation is progressing well. Roof sheets have been successfully replaced across all designated areas, including:

  • Masjid

  • Imambargha

  • Ghusalkhana

  • Maalim’s House

  • Kitchen

  • Washrooms

During the renovation process, it was observed that the Masjid had structural deterioration. Consequently, structural assessment, strengthening, and reinforcement works were carried out to ensure long-term safety and durability.

Additional Works Included in the Scope

Due to on-site requirements, the following additional works have been incorporated:

  1. Upliftment of the Sabil area

  2. Installation of aluminium windows at the Masjid and Imambargha

  3. Wall tiling at the Masjid and Imambargha

  4. Restructuring of the Masjid wudhoo and sahan areas

  5. Structural strengthening of the Masjid

  6. Renovation of the Kabrastan Hall and caretaker’s room

The Africa Federation encourages all members to participate in supporting the completion of the Mikindani Majid renovation, so that we may collectively benefit from and be part of this noble initiative.  The Housing Board is making every effort to ensure the project is completed before the commencement of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, InshaAllah.

Visit to Mikindani Kabrastan

On behalf of the Housing Board, we would like to sincerely appreciate the Secretary of Mtwara-Mikindani Jamaat, Rafiq bhai Jaffer and the caretaker Maalim Rajabu who ensured a comfortable stay for us in Mtwara.  We would also like to appreciate AFED Councillor Shahid bhai Murji for arranging necessary permits for the renovation works and for arranging transport to facilitate our visit to Lindi. Their dedication, cooperation, and tireless efforts are truly commendable, and we are grateful for their continued support and commitment to community service.

Visit to Lindi

On 8th January 2026, Akil bhai visited Lindi, where he was warmly received by Caretaker Alhaj Dilawar Khaki and Br. Murtaza Ghafar. Alhamdulillah, the Masjid in Lindi remains well maintained following the renovation completed in 2024.

Akil bhai expressed appreciation for the dedication and continuous efforts of the caretakers in maintaining the Masjid. The Africa Federation has assured its continued support should any future assistance be required.

Lindi Jamaat Properties

During the visit, Akil bhai held detailed discussions with Dilawar bhai regarding several Lindi Jamaat properties located in prime areas but currently underutilised and deteriorating. It was proposed that these properties be evaluated for upliftment and/or redevelopment to:

  • Preserve the legacy of our forefathers

  • Generate sustainable income for the Jamaat

The Africa Federation therefore appeals to past Lindi Jamaat members and the Khoja community at large to come forward with viable investment proposals that are mutually beneficial to both the Lindi Jamaat and investors. Interested members may submit their investment plans or proposals to the Africa Federation for review and consideration, and may contact the Africa Federation Secretariat should they require any further information or clarification.
