A delegation from the Africa Federation after visiting Morogoro Jamaat the previous day arrived in Zanzibar to join mourners in the observance of Arbaeen Day, marking the culmination of a solemn commemoration of the great martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A) and his faithful companions in Karbala in the year 61 A.H. The delegation, led by Africa Federation Chairman, Alhaj Amine Nassor, also included Vice Chairman Alhaj Aunali Khalfan and Chairman of Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania, Alhaj Hussein Karim. The delegation arrived in Zanzibar on the morning of Sunday, 25th August 2024.

Upon arrival, the delegation met with the leadership of the Zanzibar KSI Kuwwatul Islam Jamaat at the office in Kiponda, prior to the Zohrain Salaah. This was followed by a Majlis at Mehfil-e-Ali Makam recited by a visiting Maulana Seyed Wajeeh Akbar, thereafter Matam, Ziyarat, a heartfelt speech by Alhaj Amine Nassor, and Nyaz.

At 4:00 p.m. there was Juloos from the Mosque to Kabrastan followed by the evening program which included Namaz-e-Maghribayn, Matam at Kiponda outside the Imambargha - a tradition that has been observed for over a century - and Nyaz at Mehfil-e-Ali Makam.

In his address, Alhaj Amine Nassor expressed his gratitude for being able to attend the sombre Arbaeen gathering, which brought together community members from various parts of the world. He commended the Jamaat Managing Committee and the organizing team in Zanzibar for their dedication to Azadari and praised their efforts in upholding the institution with great zeal and devotion. He acknowledged that the spirit of Azadari in Zanzibar remains vibrant and strong—a testament to the Jamaat’s resilience and devotion over generations. "The banner of Azadari flies high in Zanzibar," he noted, emphasizing that this tradition strengthens the community’s spiritual foundation and unity.

The Chairman highlighted that Azadari forms the essence of the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri community’s identity and underscored the importance of preserving this legacy for future generations. He observed that witnessing the Arbaeen commemorations in Zanzibar firsthand was a humbling experience, adding that the Jamaat should continue to carry forward the tradition of Azadari with undiminished dedication every year.

Amine bhai also noted the growing participation from Azadars worldwide, emphasizing the great reward (Ajre Adheem) for those who join in these commemorations. He reiterated the importance of Azadari in preserving the community’s identity and legacy. “Azadari is not just a tradition; it is our very existence. It is crucial that it prevails in all Jamaats, and that we ensure this legacy is passed on securely to future generations,” the Chairman said.

Highlighting Zanzibar’s historical significance as home to the first Khoja mosque worldwide, Alhaj Amine Nassor praised the community for keeping the spirit of Imam Hussain (A) alive.

A central message shared by Alhaj Amine bhai emphasized the importance of unity among the Khoja Jamaats under the Africa Federation. He urged all AFED Jamaats to remain united, fostering a collaborative spirit to uplift the community in all dimensions saying that it is through collective strength that the Khoja community can uplift itself spiritually, academically, and economically.

During the visit, the delegation also met with Brother Sadique Mustafa Jaffer of the Jaffer Family Foundation (JFF) of New York, who was present in Zanzibar for the occasion.

The Zanzibar Jamaat also brought to the attention of the delegation the pressing need for support in the renovation and repair of the upper floor of the Imambargha, which requires the replacement of its entire roof structure. This project has been identified as critical to maintaining the historical building.

The Africa Federation extends its gratitude to the Zanzibar Jamaat for their warm hospitality and successful organization of the Arbaeen Day commemorations. Special thanks to Br. Akbarali Hassanali, Br. Mohammed Naushad Allarakhia, Br. Suleiman Naushad Allarakhia and Br. Amir Yusuf.

The Federation remains committed to supporting its constituent Jamaats and continuing the vital work of strengthening the Khoja community across the continent.

May Allah (SWT) grant the leaders and volunteers of our Jamaats with long, healthy and successful life, Ameen.

Let us please recite Sura-e-Fateha for the past leaders and volunteers of Zanzibar Jamaat, the Marhumeen of Zanzibar Jamaat, and all the Marhumeen, Al Fateha.
