Nairobi Jamaat Successfully Hosts the 90th Africa Federation Supreme Council Session


The 90th Supreme Council Session of the Federation of KSI Jamaats of Africa (AFED) was successfully hosted by the Shia Asna Asheri Jamaat (SAAJ) Nairobi at the Jaffery Islamic Centre (JIC) from Friday, 1st to Sunday, 3rd May 2026. 


The attendance at the Conference was remarkable; over 200 participants, including 71 councillors, dignitaries, invitees, and observers from 16 countries including Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Reunion, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, U.A.E., U.K. and U.S.A. 


The Nairobi Jamaat exhibited perfect hospitality in hosting the Session and providing well-coordinated logistics, accommodation, meals, meeting set up and other required arrangements for the Session.



The Session commenced with the eloquent recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, selected passages from Dua Tawassul and Dua-e-Hujjah by Alhaj Sadiq Dewji of Dar es Salaam. 


This was then followed by the self-introduction of councillors, dignitaries, invitees and representatives from various AFED Boards to the assembly.


Alhaj Shaik Alimamod, Hon. Secretary of the Association Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri of Madagascar (AKSIAM) and Alhaj Mounir Hassam Alibay, Chairman of the Union Des Associations Khodjas Shia Isnashri De La Reunion (UAKSIR) shared a brief report of the activities carried out by their respective Territorial Councils in Madagascar and Reunion Islands.



Opening Session Highlights:

The formal Opening Session commenced on Friday evening, beginning with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an.  Alhaj Fazleabbas Chandoo, Covenor of the Organizing Committee of Nairobi Jamaat, then extended a warm welcome to all participants and guests attending the Supreme Council Session.  


Alhaj Dr. Mazaher Jaffer Chairman of Nairobi Jamaat and Alhaj Safdar Jaffer President of the World Federation then addressed the Session respectively.



The Chairman of Africa Federation, Alhaj Amine Nassor, addressed the audience and expressed his pride in witnessing a full-house participation, reflecting the unity and commitment of the community.



Following were the key highlights from his keynote address:


  • Emphasized the importance of unity, collaboration, and collective responsibility within the Jamaats and institutions across Africa.

  • Appreciated the overwhelming participation and active engagement of delegates, describing it as a sign of the community’s continued strength and dedication.

  • Encouraged the youth to take an active role in leadership, community development, and future initiatives of the Federation.

  • Highlighted the significance of education, social welfare, and sustainable development projects being undertaken under the umbrella of Africa Federation.

  • Stressed the need to preserve Islamic values, traditions, and ethics while adapting to the changing challenges of modern society.

  • Acknowledged and thanked the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and participants for their tireless efforts in ensuring the success of the event.

  • Called upon all members to continue working together with sincerity and vision for the betterment and progress of the community.

The Chairman of Africa Federation, Alhaj Aminebhai Nassor, then presented a token of appreciation to the Chairman of Nairobi (SAAJ) Jamaat, Alhaj Dr. Mazaher Jaffer, in recognition and appreciation of hosting the 90th Supreme Council Session.



On Thursday, 30th April 2026, the Nairobi Jaffery Sports Club (NJSC) graciously hosted a dinner in honour of all participants attending the Supreme Council Session. The gathering provided an excellent opportunity for brotherhood and unity, bringing together councillors and members of the community.  


On behalf of NJSC, Alhaj Dr. F. S. Abdallah, warmly welcomed all the esteemed guests and delegates to Nairobi. In his address, he shared a brief history of the Sports Club, highlighting its journey, achievements, and continued commitment towards promoting unity, sportsmanship, and community engagement. As a gesture of gratitude and recognition, Alhaj Amirali Nanji, Secretary of NJSC presented an appreciation award to the Chairman of Africa Federation, Alhaj Amine Nassor.  The dinner programme concluded with a flag-raising ceremony, symbolizing unity and the spirit of togetherness.



During the evening, the Chairman of the Africa Federation, Alhaj Amine Nassor, bestowed the prestigious ‘Husseini’ and ‘Abbasi’ Medals upon two distinguished members of the community. These medals were awarded in recognition of their exemplary dedication, selfless services, and invaluable contributions towards the growth and development of the community. 


Citations for each recipient were read out, providing a brief chronicle of their outstanding achievements, years of devoted service, and the significant impact they have made through their contributions to the community. 


Alhaj Fazleabbas Chandoo (Nairobi) – Abbasi Medal

Honoured for his dedicated service, steadfast commitment, and exemplary efforts in advancing the welfare and progress of the community. 


The Abbasi Medal was bestowed upon him by the Vice Chairman of Africa Federation and President of UAKSIR, Alhaj Mounir Hassam Alibay. The Citation was read out by Alhaj Murtaza Somji, Vice Chairman of Africa Federation and presented by AFED Chairman, Alhaj Amine bhai Nassor.



Posthumous Citation – Marhum Dr. Naushad Merali (Nairobi) – Husseini Medal

Awarded posthumously in recognition of his outstanding legacy of service, generosity, visionary leadership, and enduring contributions to the community. 


The medal was received by his wife, Zarin bai Merali, who continues to uphold and carry forward his remarkable legacy of compassion, philanthropy, and community service. Her continued dedication towards charitable and humanitarian causes stands as a testament to the values and principles that Marhum Dr. Naushad Merali championed throughout his lifetime. Her graceful presence at the ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of his lifelong commitment to the service of humanity and the community. 


The Citation was read out by Alhaj Dr. Mazaher Jaffer, Chairman of Nairobi (SAAJ) Jamaat.  The Husseini Medal was presented by the Chairlady of Nairobi (SAAJ) Jamaat, Sabiha bai Hassanali and the Citation was presented by the AFED Chairman, Alhaj Amine bhai Nassor.

On the morning of Saturday 2nd May 2026, Alhaj Tehsin Takim, on behalf of the AFED Education Board, conducted a strategy and solutions-focused workshop aimed at reviewing the current Higher Education Loan (HELP) Scheme.  The key challenges were discussed and practical reforms were explored to ensure the scheme remains sustainable, fair and effective for future generations.



Br. Waris Kanani, Managing Committee Member of Kinshasa Jamaat, delivered a presentation on the Jamaat’s upcoming Mosque project, for which they are currently seeking financial support and contributions from the community. He also highlighted the remarkable achievement of Lubumbashi Jamaat, where a community school was successfully constructed through self-funding efforts, reflecting the dedication, unity, and commitment of the local community towards educational development.



A designated Youth Table was set up by the AFED Youth Board (AYN) providing youth delegates with the opportunity to be part of the Session, learn about the various activities and programs organized by AFED and its Boards, and share their perspectives with the participants.
