What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare viral infection primarily spread by contact with infected rodents (such as rats and mice) or their droppings, urine, and saliva.
How is it transmitted?
The virus can spread when
Dust contaminated with rodent droppings or urine is inhaled
Food or surfaces contaminated by rodents are touched
In rare cases, through rodent bites
It is not commonly spread from person to person.
Symptoms to watch for
Early symptoms may resemble flu and include
Fever and chills
Muscle aches
Headache
Fatigue
In more severe cases
Shortness of breath
Coughing
Chest discomfort
If symptoms worsen, seek medical attention promptly.
Prevention and Precautions
Simple steps can significantly reduce risk
Keep homes and surroundings clean and free from rodents
Store food in sealed containers
Dispose of garbage properly
Avoid sweeping or vacuuming areas with rodent droppings (use disinfectant instead)
Wash hands regularly after cleaning
At present, this is only a precautionary advisory. There is no need for alarm, but maintaining cleanliness and awareness will help protect ourselves and our families.
Let us remain vigilant, responsible, and proactive in ensuring the wellbeing of our members.
