Alhamdulillah, the Africa Federation Tabligh Board (AFTAB) successfully hosted the fifth Pre-University Course (Pre-Uni 5) from 10th to 19th July 2026 at Seascape Hotel & Conference Centre, Dar es Salaam. The camp brought together 60 participants from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kigali, Mombasa and Nairobi, supported by 20 dedicated mentors, many of whom are also teachers and youth leaders within their communities.
The Pre-University Course is a 10-day program tailored for youth aged 16 to 19, designed to prepare them for the academic, social, and spiritual challenges of university life. It provides a holistic blend of educational classes, spiritual guidance, and recreational activities, enabling participants to develop both personally and spiritually.
This year's program marked a special milestone, being the fifth cohort of Pre-Uni, and continued the strong legacy built over the past four years while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of our youth. With a focus on strengthening Islamic identity, nurturing a sense of community belonging and responsibility, and developing practical life skills, the course sought to strike a balance between knowledge, spirituality, skills, and recreation.
In Memory of Alhaj Shabbir Kermalli
Before turning to this year's proceedings, it is important to first acknowledge a profound loss felt throughout the planning and running of Pre-Uni 5. For many years, Br. Shabbir Kermalli served as Head of Logistics, quietly ensuring that every aspect of the camp ran smoothly, often working behind the scenes and going well beyond what was asked of him. His attention to detail, dedication, and willingness to serve without seeking recognition shaped the camp in ways that were felt long after each course concluded.
This year, for the first time, Pre-Uni proceeded without him, and his absence was deeply felt by the entire organizing team. AFTAB extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and prays that Allah (swt) grants him the highest station in Jannah and grants his loved one’s patience and comfort. His legacy of selfless service remains an example for all who continue this work.

Knowledge & Classes: Building Foundations for University Life
Each day began with Fajr jamaat prayers and reflection, followed by structured morning classes designed specifically to prepare participants for the transition to university life.
The Program curriculum rather than focusing solely on academics, took a holistic approach to student life, bridging the gap between spiritual growth and practical reality. Participants explored foundational Islamic concepts such as deepening their connection to Allah (swt), the Qur'an, and the Ahlulbayt (a.s.), while engaging in critical discussions around modern worldviews, wealth, and identity.
A significant portion of the coursework was dedicated to navigating the immediate challenges of campus life. This included interactive sessions on time management, navigating personal freedoms, handling religious doubts, and understanding practical ahkam regarding daily student interactions and finances. Ultimately, the lessons served as a guide for self-discipline, helping the youth balance their studies, spirituality, and personal growth.
Classes were interactive and discussion-driven, designed not only to transfer knowledge but also to develop critical thinking and reflection. Mentors remained accessible during breaks and evenings, allowing participants to seek further clarification and personal guidance.
Practical Skills & Team-Building
The Pre-Uni course continued to emphasise hands-on learning through activities designed to build independence, teamwork, and reflection.
Washing & Stitching: Participants worked in teams to wash intentionally soiled towels using limited resources, an exercise in teamwork and problem-solving accompanied by reflection on how, just as stains can be cleansed with effort, spiritual shortcomings can be addressed through sincere repentance. Alongside this, participants were introduced to basic hand-stitching, working on small practical projects.
A cooking competition was held where teams competed to prepare dishes within a set time under mentor guidance, an exercise that reinforced time management, collaboration, and appreciation for one another.
Participants took part in the Treasure Hunt, working through riddles and challenges to earn keys toward unlocking a shared treasure, an exercise symbolising unity and the value of working together toward a common goal.
Two quizzes were held this year, one team-based and one individual, testing participants on what they had learned throughout the course. Winning teams and top-performing individuals were recognised across these various activities.
Sports, Recreation & Outings
Beyond the structured classes and activities, participants also enjoyed a variety of sports and outings that promoted health, bonding, and fun. A visit to Hayaat Gym reinforced the importance of physical wellbeing, while swimming at Water World offered a fun and refreshing break from the daily schedule.
This year's excursion took participants to the beach, where they enjoyed further activities and swimming, offering a balance to the intensive schedule of classes and activities. Participants also had the opportunity to follow the FIFA World Cup during the camp, with the semi-finals viewed together mid-course and the final watched following the closing ceremony.
Mentorship & Spiritual Growth
Mentors remained central to the success of Pre-Uni 5, providing guidance academically, spiritually, and personally throughout the programme. Evening one-to-one sessions continued to provide a safe space for participants to share their challenges and receive guidance tailored to their individual journeys.
The camp also nurtured spiritual development through daily jamaat and Jumu'ah prayers, reinforcing that university life is not only about academic success but about keeping Allah (swt) at the centre of one's path.
Closing Ceremony
The Closing Ceremony was held on Sunday, 19th July 2026, marking the conclusion of a programme that once again left a lasting impact on its participants. The ceremony was honoured by the presence of AFED Office Bearers, dignitaries, and other esteemed guests, including:

As the Pre-Uni 5 family parts ways, the lessons learnt, friendships formed, and memories created will continue to inspire them, a reminder that they are never alone but part of a wider community that supports, nurtures, and believes in them.
