AFED Chairman's Message - Muharram 1448 A.H.

Our Ref: PR/AF/22/26                                                       Date: June 16, 2026

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

And reckon not those who are killed in Allah's way as dead; nay, they are alive (and) are provided sustenance from their Lord.

(Holy Qur’an Surah, Ale Imran 3:169)

As we enter the sacred month of Muharram and commence the season of grief and remembrance, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Imam of our Time, Imam Mahdi (ATFS), to the Ahlulbayt ('A), and to all believers across the world. We pray that Allah (SWT) grants us the tawfeeq not only to mourn Imam Hussain ('A) and the martyrs of Karbala, but also to understand and embody the timeless values for which they sacrificed everything.

Muharram is not merely a period of mourning; it is a school of spiritual awakening. It is a powerful reminder that truth must never surrender to falsehood, justice must never yield to oppression, and faith must never be compromised for worldly gain.

Imam Hussain ('A) declared:

"I have not risen out of arrogance, pride, corruption or oppression. Rather, I have risen to seek reform in the Ummah of my grandfather. I wish to enjoin good and forbid evil and follow the path of my grandfather and my father, Ali ibn Abi Talib ('A)."

These immortal words define the essence of Karbala. Imam Hussain ('A) stood against tyranny when silence would have been safer. He chose sacrifice when compromise would have been easier. He gave his family, companions and ultimately his own life to preserve the true message of Islam and protect human dignity.

The tragedy of Karbala was not merely a battle fought in the deserts of Iraq over fourteen centuries ago. It is an enduring struggle between justice and injustice, truth and falsehood, integrity and corruption. The forces that confronted Imam Hussain ('A) sought power through oppression, deception and fear. Today, although the faces and circumstances may have changed, humanity continues to witness oppression, injustice, conflict and the abuse of power in many parts of the world.

The message of Karbala therefore remains as relevant today as it was on the Day of Ashura. As followers of the Ahlulbayt ('A), we are called upon to uphold truth, defend the oppressed, promote justice, strengthen our communities and remain steadfast in our faith regardless of the challenges we face.

Muharram also presents us with an opportunity to share the universal message of Imam Hussain ('A) with people of all backgrounds and beliefs. The stand of Karbala transcends sectarian, ethnic and geographical boundaries. It speaks to every human being who values freedom, justice, compassion and moral courage. Through our words, actions and outreach, let us ensure that the light of Hussain ('A) continues to illuminate hearts and minds across generations.

As we gather in our centres, mosques and Jamaats throughout Muharram and Safar, let us ensure that these gatherings become platforms for spiritual growth, education, unity and service.

Let us strengthen our commitment to Tabligh, deepen our understanding of Islamic teachings and inspire our youth to embrace the noble values exemplified by the martyrs of Karbala.

Message to the Youth

During the sacred month of Muharram, I would like to address the youth of our Community with a special message, a message filled with hope, confidence, and inspiration.

Karbala is not merely a chapter of our history; it is a timeless school of life for every generation. The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (‘A) teaches us that faith, truth, courage, and integrity must always prevail, even in the face of the greatest trials and challenges.

You are the future of our community, your presence and participation at our functions (Namaz, Majalis, Azadari programs which include Nawha, matam, Julus, Nyaz and sabil) is your commitment to the teachings of the Ahlul Bayt (‘A) and is essential in preserving and continuing on the legacy of Karbala to future generations.

I encourage you to make this Muharram a time of reflection, learning, and commitment, draw inspiration from the noble values of Imam Hussain (‘A) and strive to become responsible, respectful, knowledgeable, and compassionate individuals dedicated to serving Community.

May the spirit of Karbala guide you in your studies, responsibilities, relationships, and life choices. Wherever you are become ambassadors of justice, compassion, dignity, and unity.

I encourage youth to participate actively in the Azadari programs with discipline, respect, and devotion, so that the light of Karbala’s message may continue to shine through your actions and commitment.

May Allah (SWT) bless you with wisdom, success, and steadfastness, and may the love of Imam Hussain (‘A) remain forever alive in your hearts.

I humbly urge all members of our community to support our Member Jamaats and the Bilal Muslim Mission and other institutions that tirelessly organize majalis, educational programmes, humanitarian initiatives and Tabligh activities throughout the year. Your support enables the message of the Ahlulbayt ('A) to reach communities far and wide and helps preserve the legacy of Karbala for future generations.

During these challenging times, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting the oppressed, assisting those in need and standing alongside all who suffer injustice. Let us raise our hands in prayer for peace, security and justice throughout the world. Let us remember those who are enduring war, oppression, poverty and hardship, and beseech Allah (SWT) to grant them relief, dignity and protection. Inspired by the timeless message of Karbala, we pray for freedom, steadfastness and victory for all those who stand upon truth and justice, who defend the oppressed, and who courageously give voice to the voiceless.

Let us also remember our marhumeen and recite Surah al-Fatiha for the maghfirah of their souls. May Allah (SWT) elevate their ranks and unite us with the Ahlulbayt ('A) under the banner of Imam Hussain ('A).

As we commemorate this sacred season, let us not merely shed tears for Karbala; let us strive to live by its message. Let our mourning inspire action, our remembrance inspire reform, and our love for Imam Hussain ('A) inspire us to become better servants of Allah and better members of society.

"Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala."

May Allah (SWT) accept our mourning, our prayers and our service.
