The Africa Federation Archives Section, in collaboration with the Khoja Heritage Project and The Community on Friday, successfully hosted an enriching program, “Gujarati and the Khojas: A Story of Identity & Survival”, on the 9th of January 2025 at AFED Tower. The event highlighted the central role of Gujarati language in preserving the cultural and heritage identity of the Khoja community, fostering unity across generations, and addressing challenges to its continuity amidst diversity and globalization.

The event commenced with a reflective Qur'anic insight delivered by Dr. Abbasaley Abbas, Sectional Secretary of the AFED Archives Section.

Drawing inspiration from Chapter 49, Verse 13 of the Holy Qur'an — "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." — Dr. Abbasaley underscored the divine wisdom behind the diversity of languages and cultures. He emphasized the pivotal role of language in fostering mutual understanding, strengthening community bonds, and preserving identity, tying it beautifully to the importance of safeguarding heritage for future generations.

Alhaj Mohamedarif Suleman, Founder and Moderator of The Community on Friday (TCOF) then engaged attendees with an interactive quiz on Gujarati terminologies. This activity not only enlightened participants about the richness of the language but also highlighted the joy of reconnecting with one’s linguistic roots, emphasizing the importance of retaining fluency in Gujarati for future generations.

The centrepiece of the evening was an insightful talk by Dr. Hasnain Walji, who traced the historical journey of Gujarati within the Khoja community. Through compelling examples, he demonstrated how the language has been a vital thread weaving together; traditions, moral teachings, and liturgy. Dr. Walji also explored innovative solutions to reinvigorate the use of Gujarati, such as integrating education, technology, and community initiatives.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Alhaj Aunali Khalfan, Vice-Chairman of Africa Federation. He expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of Africa Federation to Dr. Hasnain Walji and presented him with a token of appreciation for his invaluable contributions towards the heritage and language during the evening program. Alhaj Aunali Khalfan requested Alhaj Sajjad Jusab, Vice President of Dar es Salaam Jamaat, to do the honors to present the token. The atmosphere of camaraderie and reflection continued over dinner, where attendees enjoyed the warmth of fellowship that resonated with the event's theme of heritage and unity.

The Africa Federation Archives Team extends its deepest gratitude to the Khoja Heritage Project and The Community on Friday for their collaboration. Special thanks are also due to the Africa Federation Office Bearers and Secretariat for their unwavering encouragement and support in organizing this meaningful event. Collectively, these efforts have reignited a passion for preserving Gujarati as a living heritage, inspiring the Khoja community to continue celebrating its linguistic and cultural identity.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the attendees whose presence and enthusiasm made this gathering truly memorable. “Your active participation and shared passion for our heritage have greatly contributed to the success of this initiative, reinforcing the importance of preserving Gujarati as a living legacy. Together, we celebrate our linguistic and cultural identity, inspiring the Khoja community to keep this rich heritage alive for generations to come”, said the Vice Chairman of Africa Federation.

Mentorship is a transformative force that extends far beyond the transfer of knowledge—it is the foundation upon which thriving communities are built. A well-guided mentoring relationship fosters confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose, empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to their societies. Recognizing the critical role of mentorship, the Africa Federation Capacity Building Board (CBG) continues to nurture this practice through its Mentor Development Programme (MDP), equipping individuals with the tools to uplift and guide others effectively.

On the 22nd and 23rd of February 2025, CBG facilitated an impactful MDP session hosted by Arusha Jamaat bringing together 11 dedicated participants keen to enhance their mentoring capabilities. Under the guidance of Alhaj Shabbirhussein Khalfan and supported by MDP Lead Neelambai Jiwa and CBG Board Member and Facilitator Mumtaz bai Ladak the program provided an immersive and interactive learning experience designed to strengthen the skills necessary for effective mentorship. Through a series of engaging discussions, practical exercises, and real-world applications, participants gained valuable insights into fostering meaningful mentor-mentee relationships.

A key focus of the program was Egan’s Skilled Helper Model, a structured approach that enables mentors to guide their mentees through a process of self-reflection, goal-setting, and problem-solving. By mastering these essential skills, the participants are now better equipped to serve as compassionate and effective mentors, creating a ripple effect of positive influence within their communities.

Mentoring is not just about guiding someone through a challenge—it is about instilling self-belief, providing a safe space for growth, and cultivating a culture of continuous learning. Strong mentorship leads to stronger individuals, who in turn contribute to stronger communities. Through structured training and hands-on application, the MDP ensures that mentors can support, inspire, and uplift those around them, fostering sustainable personal and communal development.

The Arusha MDP session underscored CBG’s commitment to developing mentorship networks within various Jamaats, ensuring that knowledge-sharing and personal development remain at the heart of community progress. By investing in mentorship, we invest in the future, shaping a generation of leaders who will drive meaningful change through guidance and service.

CBG extends its deepest gratitude to the Office Bearers of Africa Federation and Arusha Jamaat for their invaluable support in making this session a success. CBG is equally grateful to the Africa Federation Secretariat for its continuous guidance and cooperation, which enables the consistent implementation of such impactful training programs.

Finally, we commend the participants who dedicated their time and effort to this transformative journey. Their commitment to personal growth and community service exemplifies the true spirit of mentorship, and we look forward to witnessing the positive change they will bring to those around them.
