Dodoma - Reverse Migration Initiative

DODOMA – TANZANIA'S GROWING CAPITAL WITH LIMITLESS POTENTIAL

REVERSE MIGRATION INITIATIVE

BY THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD OF AFRICA FEDERATION

Strategically Located at the Nation’s Center

Dodoma, Tanzania’s official capital city since 1973, has rapidly transformed from a modest town into a well-planned city at the heart of national growth. Centrally located, approximately 450 km west of Dar es Salaam, it serves as the seat of government and is increasingly becoming a hub for development, governance, and investment.

Historical Significance

Originally a Gogo tribal settlement, Dodoma has grown through colonial, post-independence, and recent government planning phases. It was chosen as the capital to ensure balanced national development and decentralization from the coast, representing Tanzania’s vision of unity and accessibility.

Geography and Climate

Situated on a plateau at 1,100 meters above sea level, Dodoma boasts a semi-arid climate. Warm, dry weather dominates much of the year, with temperatures ranging between 16°C and 32°C. The city enjoys two main seasons: a dry spell from May to October and a rainy season between November and April, ideal for seasonal agriculture and greenery.

Economy

Dodoma’s economy is rapidly diversifying. Once dominated by agriculture, it now features a mix of public sector activity, construction, services, and trade. Key crops include grapes (for which Dodoma is famous), maize, millet, and sunflowers.

Government institutions, private sector growth, and increasing real estate development have positioned Dodoma as a city of emerging economic importance.

Healthcare

Dodoma’s healthcare sector is expanding in step with its growing population. The city hosts key facilities such as the Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (a modern, technologically advanced national hospital), and several private clinics. Government investment in medical education and infrastructure has further improved access and quality.

Education

Dodoma is home to prestigious institutions, notably the University of Dodoma (UDOM) – one of the largest in East and Central Africa. It also hosts St. John’s University, vocational colleges, and reputable private schools, providing a strong educational foundation for all age groups. Educational services are expected to further expand with population growth.

Transportation and Connectivity

Dodoma is seamlessly connected by road, air, and rail:

  • Air: Dodoma Airport operates daily flights to Dar es Salaam and other key cities. A new international airport (MSALATO) is under planning and expected to be running after July 2025. A flight from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes only.

  • Road: The upgraded Tanzam and Great North Roads connect Dodoma to all corners of Tanzania. A drive from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma takes about 8-9 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions

  • Rail: The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is expected to be a game-changer, connecting Dodoma swiftly to Dar and Mwanza. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes by Express Train and almost 4 hours by Ordinary Train, significantly reducing travel time compared to road transport.

Accommodation and Lifestyle

The city offers a growing selection of modern housing developments, apartments, and gated communities. New hotels such as Royal Village, New Dodoma Hotel, and a range of guesthouses cater to travelers and professionals.

Lifestyle in Dodoma is calm, family-friendly, and affordable. The city blends urban convenience with a small-town feel.

Investment Opportunities

Dodoma presents dynamic opportunities in:

  • Agribusiness – grapes, horticulture

  • Education and Healthcare – to meet the rising demand

  • Hospitality and Retail – growing middle class and tourism

  • Government Services and NGOs – as many relocate their HQs to the capital

The government's special attention to Dodoma as the administrative heart of Tanzania ensures continued infrastructure and policy support for investors.

Our Community in Dodoma

Dodoma is already home to a small but growing Khoja Shia community. It has a mosque, Imambargah, and ongoing Tarbiyah and Madressa activities. Programs for Ramadhan, Muharram, and Wafaat/Khushali are held regularly. There are currently around 4 families, with increasing interest from professionals and retirees alike.

Reflections

Dodoma represents not just a move inland – but a move forward. With the government’s focus, rising opportunities, and affordable lifestyle, it is perfectly positioned for those seeking growth, peace, and community.

The AFED Economic Development Board encourages members to explore Dodoma as a destination for reverse migration. The board will offer financial grants and setup support for eligible community members establishing businesses or relocating their families to Dodoma.
