Connecting Young Hearts to a Rich Legacy – Heritage Session in Nairobi

In line with the objectives of the Africa Federation Archives Section to engage younger children and inculcate in them an appreciation and knowledge of our history and heritage, the Archives Section organized a special storytelling and colouring session for children aged 6 - 10 years at the SAAJ Library in Nairobi on May 3, 2026.

The session created a warm and engaging environment where children were introduced to the rich history and enduring legacy of the Khoja community. Through carefully curated storytelling, the program sought to connect the younger generation with the values, traditions and sacrifices that continue to shape the identity of the community across the world today.

Facilitated by Dr. Abbasaley Abbas, the Sectional Secretary of Archives Section and assisted by Sr. Zeba Merchant, member of Archives Section, the Session began with the children enthusiastically learning and interacting with several Gujarati words, creating an immediate sense of connection with their cultural roots. The children were then taken on a meaningful journey through the origins of the community in India and the challenges faced during the migration to East Africa.

Through vivid narration and age-appropriate discussions, the participants learned about the determination and resilience of early pioneers such as Dewji Jamal and Mulla Qadir, among many others whose sacrifices and vision laid important foundations for future generations. The stories highlighted how communities came together to establish mosques, musafirkhanas, schools and businesses through unity, service and unwavering faith.

Particular emphasis was placed on the timeless values embodied by Imam Hussain (as) of courage, justice, compassion and service to humanity and how these principles were reflected in the lives and efforts of the community’s forefathers. The children were gently reminded that they are the custodians of this legacy and the future torchbearers of a heritage built upon faith, dignity, perseverance and devotion to the Ahlulbayt (as).

The session concluded with a lively colouring activity allowing the children to creatively express and reinforce what they had learned in a joyful and memorable manner.

Through initiatives such as these, the Africa Federation Archives Section continues to preserve and transmit the stories of the past in ways that inspire younger generations to remain connected to their identity, values and heritage.
