Zanzibar once again witnessed a deeply moving and spiritually significant commemoration of Arbaeen of Aba Abdillah al-Hussain (‘A), continuing a cherished tradition of Azadari that has been preserved by the community for generations. The solemnity and devotion with which Arbaeen is commemorated in Zanzibar have earned it a special place in the hearts of Azadars, with the island becoming a gathering point for community members from across the world to honour the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (‘A), his family and his loyal companions.

On Monday, 3rd August 2026, the Chairman of the Africa Federation, Alhaj Amine Nassor, accompanied by the AFED Vice Chairman, Alhaj Murtaza Somji and AFED Past Chariman and Trustee Alhaj Shabir Najafi arrived in Zanzibar to participate in the Arbaeen commemorations organized by the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Kuwwatul Islam Jamaat.

Their arrival coincided with the opening of the Mehfil-e-Bibi Sakina (‘A) on the eve of Arbaeen. The opening, supported by the Jaffer Family Foundation (JFF) of New York, was a significant addition to the religious and communal heritage of Zanzibar and provided a dedicated space for remembrance and reflection on the suffering and steadfastness of Bibi Sakina (‘A) and the Ahlulbayt (‘A) following the tragedy of Karbala.

On Monday, 4th August 2026, the community came together in large numbers for the Arbaeen commemorations. The programmes reflected the rich traditions of Azadari for which Zanzibar is renowned, with Majalis, Juloos, Matam, Mawkib and other forms of Azadari bringing the community together in remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala.

The Chairman expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to once again witness the devotion of the Zanzibar community during Arbaeen. He noted that the manner in which Azadari is preserved and practised in Zanzibar is a source of inspiration, particularly in the way generations of community members have remained connected to the traditions of Imam Hussain (‘A).

He commended the Kuwwatul Islam Jamaat leadership, volunteers and all those who contributed to the successful programmes, highlighting the importance of preserving these traditions and ensuring that they continue to be embraced by the younger generation.

The visit also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the continued support of the Jaffer Family Foundation of New York, whose contribution to community and heritage initiatives in Zanzibar has helped preserve important institutions and spaces connected to the community’s religious legacy. The opening of Mehfil-e-Bibi Sakina (‘A) was another meaningful contribution towards strengthening the spiritual and communal life of the Zanzibar community.

Below are some photographs:

The Arbaeen commemorations brought together community members from Zanzibar and various parts of Africa, as well as visitors from overseas, all united by their love for Aba Abdillah al-Hussain (‘A). The gathering once again demonstrated how the message of Karbala transcends geographical boundaries, bringing hearts together in the spirit of Labayk Ya Hussain.

The Africa Federation extends its sincere appreciation to the leadership and members of KSI Kuwwatul Islam Jamaat, the dedicated volunteers, Mawkib organizers, well-wishers and the Jaffer Family Foundation of New York for their invaluable efforts and support in making the Arbaeen commemorations and the opening of Mehfil-e-Bibi Sakina (‘A) meaningful and memorable occasions.

May Allah (SWT) accept the Majalis, Matam, service and sacrifices of all the Azadars and grant them continued tawfeeq to uphold and transmit the legacy of Imam Hussain (‘A) to future generations and may the spirit of Azadari continue to flourish across all our Jamaats in Africa, Ameen.

Let us recite Sura-e-Fateha for the past leaders and volunteers of the Africa Federation, and all the Marhumeen – Al-Fateha.
