Eighty years is not just a measure of time.
It is a measure of vision sustained, challenges endured and a legacy carried forward.
From its humble beginnings in the mid-1940s, the Africa Federation has grown into a unified body that today brings together Jamaats across the continent and beyond. What started as an effort to bring East African Jamaats under one umbrella has expanded into a network of 46 Jamaats across mainland Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, reflecting both growth and continuity.
But growth in this journey has never been limited to numbers.
Over the decades, the Federation has continued to evolve, responding to the changing needs of the community while staying rooted in its founding principles of unity, service and progress. This evolution is reflected not only in structure but in impact. From supporting education through loan schemes, scholarships and grants to providing medical assistance and community welfare support, and advancing economic initiatives aimed at long-term sustainability, the Federation has consistently worked to uplift its members.
A key dimension of this progress has been the deliberate shift towards financial sustainability and self-reliance. To commemorate its Platinum Jubilee, the Federation inaugurated the AFED Business Park in Dar es Salaam on 30th October 2021, marking a significant step in investing in income-generating ventures that secure long-term financial stability. Designed to support educational, economic and social programs, the Business Park reflects the Federation’s ability to adapt to modern challenges while remaining focused on its core purpose.
This forward-looking approach is further embodied in another historic milestone - the establishment of the AFED Tower in Dar es Salaam, inaugurated on 11th March 2022. For the first time in its history, the Federation now operates from its own dedicated premises. More than just a building, the Tower represents institutional maturity and operational strength, housing commercial outlets, residential spaces, a training facility and administrative offices under one roof. It stands as a symbol of resilience, progress and collective achievement. Together with the Business Park and similar initiatives, it reinforces a sustainable financial model that ensures the Federation can continue serving future generations.

As the Africa Federation now approaches 80 years since its establishment, this journey takes on even greater significance. The spirit of growth and renewal continues to manifest in meaningful ways. At the 89th Supreme Council Session held in 2025, the launch of the book “Dhows to Diaspora: The Khoja Journey and the Legacy of the Africa Federation” marked an important step in preserving and documenting the community’s rich heritage ensuring that future generations remain connected to their roots.

Alongside this, the introduction of the SHINE Endowment Fund reflected a bold and collaborative approach to faith-based giving, bringing together global efforts to strengthen the Federation’s financial sustainability and long-term impact.

And as we move towards the 90th Supreme Council Session in May 2026, that same spirit continues. Each session is not just a meeting; it is part of an ongoing journey. It is a continuation of conversations that began decades ago, a reaffirmation of responsibility towards the community and a reminder that the work of building, guiding and strengthening this institution is a shared trust.
From a single question in 1945 to a global, structured Federation today, the journey has been remarkable.
And as we stand at this milestone, one truth remains clear:
The legacy of the Africa Federation is not only in what has been built over the past 80 years but in the responsibility to carry it forward.
