The Africa Federation Archives Section, in collaboration with the Khoja Heritage Project and The Community on Friday, successfully hosted an enriching program, “Gujarati and the Khojas: A Story of Identity & Survival”, on the 9th of January 2025 at AFED Tower. The event highlighted the central role of Gujarati language in preserving the cultural and heritage identity of the Khoja community, fostering unity across generations, and addressing challenges to its continuity amidst diversity and globalization.

The event commenced with a reflective Qur'anic insight delivered by Dr. Abbasaley Abbas, Sectional Secretary of the AFED Archives Section.

Drawing inspiration from Chapter 49, Verse 13 of the Holy Qur'an — "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." — Dr. Abbasaley underscored the divine wisdom behind the diversity of languages and cultures. He emphasized the pivotal role of language in fostering mutual understanding, strengthening community bonds, and preserving identity, tying it beautifully to the importance of safeguarding heritage for future generations.

Alhaj Mohamedarif Suleman, Founder and Moderator of The Community on Friday (TCOF) then engaged attendees with an interactive quiz on Gujarati terminologies. This activity not only enlightened participants about the richness of the language but also highlighted the joy of reconnecting with one’s linguistic roots, emphasizing the importance of retaining fluency in Gujarati for future generations.
