Throughout history, communities have thrived under the guidance of individuals who selflessly dedicate their time and efforts to service, shaping the future with their vision and commitment. Such personalities leave a lasting impact, strengthening the foundations of faith, education, and economic independence. One such remarkable leader is Alhaj Rajahussein Gulamo, whose tireless contributions have transformed the Mozambique Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri community.

Born in 1949 in a town called Mozambique Island in Mozambique, his early years in Itoculo-Monapo District and Mossuril District instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility towards his faith and community. His academic journey took him through elementary school in Mossuril, secondary school in Mozambique Island, and later Instituto Medio Commercial in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). At the age of 20, he embarked on a new chapter of life through marriage and soon joined his family’s business in Monapo District – Netia in 1973.

Rajahussein bhai’s passion for community service and dedication to the Madhab of Ahlul Bayt (AS) was evident from his youth. He took on multiple roles, serving as an advisor to the Jamaat President, contributing financially to various initiatives, and supporting the local madrasah. His unwavering commitment and leadership saw him elected as the President of the Community in 2009, a milestone that marked the beginning of transformative progress for the Mozambique Jamaat.

Under his leadership, the community witnessed remarkable advancements in infrastructure, financial self-sufficiency, and religious propagation. His presidency introduced a structured and disciplined approach, motivating members towards greater participation and development. One of his first major projects was the expansion of the mosque in 2009, which included the addition of a refectory, kitchen, Mawlana’s quarters, gym, game room, madrasah, ghusl khana, five shops, and two rental flats. That same year, he extended his service to the Nacala community, where he played a pivotal role in the opening of a mehfil and laid the first stone of the Nacala mosque with the name of Masjid Rasul Al-Akram (SAWW).

The impact of his leadership continued to grow. In 2010, an Imambargaah under the name of Mehfil Fatema Zahra (SA) in Nampula was rehabilitated and reopened, providing a dedicated space for religious gatherings. The year 2014 marked the inauguration of the Nacala Mosque, and by 2016, phase two of the mosque was completed, introducing new facilities such as ghusl khana, Mawlana’s quarters, a Jamaat refectory with a kitchen, and additional madrasah rooms. These developments not only enhanced the spiritual and communal experience but also strengthened the financial foundation of the Jamaat.

One of Rajahussein bhai’s most impactful contributions was ensuring financial sustainability for the community. Through his foresight, the rental income from the five shops and two flats enabled the Jamaat to cover 80% of its expenses, reducing reliance on member contributions and fostering economic independence.

His dedication extended beyond infrastructure, as he worked closely with the Bilal community to support madrasahs for children in mosques across the city and districts. His efforts in Tabligh, education, and economic empowerment have left an indelible mark on the Mozambique Jamaat.
