ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِيبَةٞ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيۡهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
"Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we will return”
(Holy Qur’an, Surah Al Baqarah 2:156)
“Think not of those who are slain in Allah’s way as dead. Nay, they are alive, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord”. (Holy Qur’an Surah Ali ‘Imran; 3:169)
The Africa Federation Secretariat has received with deep shock and grief the heartbreaking news of the assassination of Seyyid Hassan Nasrallah caused by massive Israeli airstrikes on residential areas in southern suburb of Beirut on Friday 27th September 2024. It is reported that his daughter Zeinab and several other people were also killed during the airstrikes. More than one thousand innocent civilians and children have been killed and many injured by the Israeli airstrikes, also causing mass displacement of Lebanese citizens.
Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah was born on 31st August 1960 in Bazourieh, a village in Jabal Amel, Southern Lebanon, he was the ninth child of his parents from amongst ten siblings and was pious from an early age, often taking long walks to the city centre to find second-hand books on Islam. He had described how he would spend his free time as a child staring reverently at a portrait of the Shia renowned scholar Musa al-Sadr; a pastime that foreshadowed his future concern with politics and Shia communities in Lebanon.
He completed his education in Tyre, when he briefly joined the Amal Movement, and afterward at a Shia seminary in Baalbek. He later studied and taught at an Amal school. After a brief period of religious studies in Iran, he returned to Lebanon and became Hezbollah’s leader after his predecessor, Sayyid Abbas al-Musawi was assassinated in February 1992 by an Israeli missile strike.
Since early in his career, Seyyid Nasrallah‘s speeches helped cement his persona as a wise, humble figure, deeply invested in the lives of common people – a leader who shunned formal Arabic in favour of the dialect spoken on the street. As the head of Hezbollah for more than 30 years, he was often described as the most powerful figure in Lebanon despite never personally holding public office.
On behalf of the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa and members of our community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Seyyid Nasrallah and the people of Lebanon on this huge loss of a dynamic leader who stood unwavering for the welfare of common people and a valiant defender for the rights of the oppressed Palestinians.
“This is indeed a great loss for the entire Shia Ummah and the people of Lebanon and Palestine. Martyr Sayyid Nasrallah was a true beacon for the protection of the Islamic cause, for justice, liberation, and the defense of the oppressed people. We send our deepest and sincere condolences to the Imam of our time (ATFS) and pray that Allah (SWT) protects and keeps the pious leaders safe from the evil forces” - Alhaj Amine Nassor.
We pray to Allah (SWT) by His infinite grace to bestow His mercy and grant Seyyid Nasrallah and all those who have lost their lives with maghferat and place their souls amongst the blessed ones in the vicinity of Ahlulbayt (‘A).
Martyr Seyyid Nasrallah is survived by his wife, Fatima Yassin. He also has three sons Jawad, Mohammed-Mahdi and Mohammed Ali, as well as several grandchildren.
Member Jamaats are requested to organize Qur’an Khwani and Majlis for the thawab of Martyr Seyyid Nasrallah. Sura-Al-Fateha is requested for all the Marhumeen who have been killed in the attacks in Lebanon, Palestine and all the Marhumeen, Al Fateha.
