The Election held in Toronto on Sunday 11^th May 2003 was the biggest in the Community’s 30 year history, in terms of the number of Candidates who stood, Polling stations that were available, voter turn out and votes cast. Such keen interest in the running of the community’s affairs is a healthy sign of our spirit and may it long continue.

The new Jamaat President, Nazir Gulamhusein said that the membership of Toronto Jamaat accepted the election platform that emphasized the need to have younger members to run the community. He said it was heartening to see younger members agree to participate in the process, in the first place, and then to accept the challenge and show the desire to move the community forward. He said the younger members of his team are focused on issues and want to distance themselves from petty politics frequently adopted by pockets of membership. He expressed hope and prayed that two years from now when his team looks back at what has been done, it will witness a model that could form the basis for other Jamaats to follow. 

Nazirbhai expressed commitment to provide his young team an opportunity as well as the room to stamp their personality on the running of the community.  He said that was the primary reason for his decision to contest for the position. He expressed hope that not only will his team complete what has been started, but will do it professionally and correctly. He said, “if my team succeeds the credit will be all theirs. If they fail, which will never be for lack of effort, I will unashamedly take the fall.”
