Habibbhai will be remembered for his great acumen in leadership of many institutions in the community as well as being the Chairman of Africa Federation. His calmness, judiciousness and understanding towards the community with modest and methodical approach are still appreciated by everyone and will always be remembered in the larger community. His leadership faced the most momentous times, when he initiated many changes and especially during the refugee crisis in Somali where momineen were stranded in the most volatile situation and were resettled in East Africa with all the resources that he could muster. He demonstrated a typical courageous and highly determined approach to this crisis that no doubt changed the course of history. Recently I interviewed him for a series of articles for Samachar on our community history and I noticed a remarkable memory that he possessed about the Khoja Shia community and also apart from that he dwelt on many issues and was full of his wisdom. His last parting words when I met him just a few days before his sad demise is indeed thought provoking. He elaborated that “It was the duty of every able momineen to lead the community for there are talents hidden everywhere and we have to tap that now” He was equally realistic about his leadership when he told me while wiping tears “I have never been happy, as I am now that I got the chance to serve my community and that is in itself the greatest service to Allah and the Awaited Imam of our time.” At this moment in time I am saddened that while were just about to chronicle the History of Khoja Shia community that he apparently had to go to London for a medical examination and it was there that he passed away sadly. Marhum Habibbhai, devoted his entire life to the community and undoubtedly his name will be added to the annals of the community history for future generations to emulate him.
