Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya

Egerton
University students at Discover Islam Seminar

A group of 40 students who are studying Islam and comparative religion at Egerton University , Department of History and Religious studies in Laikipia Campus, accompanied by a Senior Lecturer visited Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya on 12th October, 2006 to participate in ‘Discover Islam seminar’.

The Seminar commenced with recitation of verses from Surah Maryam of Holy Quran. Thereafter brief insight into the activities of Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya was given.

A presentation on Status and Rights of Women in Islam was presented by Sister Rayhana Molu. Thereafter, Mulla Sajjadali Datoo talked about Morality in Islam in the era of HIV/AIDS. This was followed by a presentation by Br.Fazleabbas Datoo on Islamophobia, Islamic Fundamentalism and terrorism .

After each presentation participants were engaged in interactive discussion. This enabled them to comment, ask questions or clear previously held misconceptions about Islam.

An exhibition of posters was done on Discover Islam Series. This display was thrilling for the visitors who took down notes.

The seminar concluded with the students being presented with gifts of literature.

Some of the comments by the students

1.      The lecture was good and encouraging; it at least shed light about Islam to most of us who had no idea. More of this should be done even to the Christian side. This will create oneness in religion. Thank you.

2.      Special comment: People should not put blame on Islam, but try to be fair and balance their arguments correctly, Its not Islam that uses force, the bombings that are taking place now are linked to imperialism- super power nation U.S.A. wanting to dominate / exploit the natural resources e.g oil. War between Iraq & Iran.

3.      First I’ am very glad for your acceptance and sacrifice to hold this lecture with us. You have answered most of the questions that have been disturbing the students who are studying Islam yet they are non Muslims. The questions on terrorism and Islamophobia, morality and Hiv/ Aids and rights of women have been well answered. I would like to have more materials on the Islamic teachings as a student of Islam. The lecture has been short thus I hope in future we shall organize for more time. I am very grateful on behalf of others.

4.      I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have participated in the lecture and most sincerely to the Islam / Muslims who have summoned us. I have come to understand certain aspects clearly and can conclude that most people are led by misunderstanding and lack of clear reasoning. This is commonly in the aspect of Islam, Jihad and many Islamic teachings and words. Keep up your efforts so as to save us people so as to face the reality.

5.      To express much sincere thanks for the way you have welcomed us, your way of approach to life issues especially terrorism and Islamophobia its eye opener.

Suggestions:

i.                     Why don’t you publish some book and make them readily available in the market.

ii.                   Air some programmes in the T.V. or Radio to enlighten the people.
