APPOINTMENT OF THE SPORTS COUNCIL

 

The Secretariat is pleased to announce the appointment of the Sports Council Chairman Br. Mahmood Amirali Somji of Arusha and Members of the Sports Council for the term 2010-2013.

 

A brief Profile of Br. Mahmood Amirali Somji

 

Born in Tanga on 18th July 1964. The family moved to Arusha, in northern Tanzania in 1968.

 

Mahmood attended his primary school in Arusha and completed his Secondary School Education and IB in Moshi at the International School Moshi, thereafter he joined Arusha Technical College in Arusha where he obtained his diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1987.

 

Mahmood is one of the upcoming successful businessman managing two companies in Arusha. He is the Managing Director of MMT Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and the Director of Themi Suites in Arusha, Tanzania. 

 

Like his father Amirbhai Somji, Mahmood is passionate and ardent sportsman with fine sporting career. Plays mostly golf with a single figure handicap and at times plays cricket. He played Tennis, Cricket, Soccer, Volleyball and Golf. He has participated in all the AFED Sports Festivals since inception.

 

Mahmood is the recipient of the Africa Federation Sportsman of the Year Abul Fazal Trophy in 1986. At National level, Mahmood was selected to represent the Tanzanian Tennis Team for the All Africa Games in 1987 in Egypt.

 

A talented person, he has been the past Chairman of Kilimeru Sports of Arusha, past Captain of Kilimeru Cricket Team, past Vice Captain of Arusha Gymkhana Golf Club. He has captained Tanzanian Golf Team in 2006 in the East and Central African competition played between Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. He is the incumbent Chairman of the Africa Federation Sports Council.
