The situation of Swine Flu continues to evolve rapidly; 13 countries have officially reported 367 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection. The United States Government has reported 141 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 156 confirmed human cases of infection, including nine deaths. The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (34), China, Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region (1), Denmark (1), Germany (4), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (4), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (8).

The WHO Director-General has raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the phase 4 to phase 5.The change to a higher phase of pandemic alert indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased, but not that a pandemic is inevitable. |

What is swine flu? Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen.

Take these everyday steps to protect your health: · Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. |

· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. · Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. · Try to avoid close contact with sick people. · If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. |
