CHB NEWS FLASH

Late Ebrahim Haji

Late Ebrahim Haji was born in 1891, he passed away in Dar Es Salaam in 1947, in his memory, his brother Juma Haji donated the building (Pictured above) to Dar Es Salaam Jamaat in 1950 for the purpose of Dispensary and Bewakhana. Juma Haji family, renowned philanthropists and successful entrepreneurs were prominent members of Dar Es Salaam Jamaat. In 1971 they migrated to Karachi, Pakistan. Most of the family members of late Ebrahim Haji and his late brother Juma Haji are presently residing in Karachi, Pakistan.

The building is on plot No. 1411/75 on Asia Street, Kisutu Ward, Ilala District in the city centre of Dar Es Salaam. The ground floor was built in 1950 and in 1959 the first floor was extended for Bewakhana in memory of late Mrs. Jenabai Haji Alibhai Ebrahim. The Dispensary was first established in 1950 but later closed down; the building was used as Union Nursery School, and, also providing other amenities for the community. In 1979 the Dispensary was re established on a small scale as the need for it was greatly felt due to lack of good healthcare and medical services in Tanzania during this period. In 1981/82 further improvements were made to the building and medical services were expanded. In 1991 the building was extended by acquiring the plot on the rear of the building through a donor (previously used as a godown) and this helped to carry out three storey vertical extension to the building for housing inpatient and children wards. It was in 1992 when the Dispensary was upgraded to a hospital status and registered under Private Hospitals (Regulations) Act, 1997, with Registration No. 0602 as a Charitable Hospital. (To comply with the Ministry of Health Regulations, the registration of the Hospital had to be changed to a Health Centre).

Ebrahim Haji Charitable Health Centre is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation and renovation, including replacement of old furniture, outdated hospital and diagnostic equipment in order to upgrade the facilities for improving the inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic services.
