THEY SAY

On this venerable occasion, in the same exhilarating sense of spiritual response and the elevating feeling of communion with the scared as one always enjoys while visiting Al-Hussein’s Mosque and Shrine in Cairo.  It gives me great happiness to join in your tribute of profound homage to the Holy Martyr of Kerbala invoking Almighty God to shower His Mercy and Blessings on the Imam’s soul and help us to fulfill the divine clarion call of Islam to devoted worship and concerted work for steps of all Muslims in the service of their countries and the whole world.

Gamal Abdel Nasser, U.A.R.  President

This day of Muharram is a day of great significance for Muslims all over in the world.  On this day took place one of the saddest and most tragic events in the history of Islam.  The Martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain was nevertheless the ultimate triumph of the true Islamic spirit as it was an act of supreme submission to the Will of God.  The martyrdom of one of the noblest followers of Islam is a lasting and shining example for all of us.  It teaches us that no matter what the difficulties and dangers that beset us we must not deviate from the path of truth and justice

                                                Liaquat Ali Khan

“Thus feel”, writes Professor I. Goldizer one of the noblest spirits of the age and with him perished all the male members of his family, old and young with the solitary exception of a sickly child whom Hussain’s sister Zainab saved from the general massacre.  He too bore the name of Ali and in after life received the designation of Zainul Abedin, the Ornament of the Pious.  He was the son of Hussain by the daughter of Yazidijerd, the last Sassanide King of Persia and through him was carried on the house of the Noble Imam”.

Dr. Iqbal the great philosopher poet thus peaks of Hazrat Hussain in a beautiful Persian poem of his in “Rumuz-u-Bekhudi.”

“Annihilated despotism till the day of resurrection;

The surge of his blood brought forth the garden of liberty

For Truth he rolled in dust and blood.

And thus he had laid the foundation of Islam

Had political supremacy been the motive of Hussain,

He would not have made his journey along with kith and kin.

His resolution is unshakeable like the mountains.

It is strong, vigorous, and successful.

The secret of Quran we have learnt from Hussain

From his fire we have kindled our flame.”
