Rural Health Care & Jigger Prevention

Dr. Mohsin and Sister Fauzia Jaffer of the Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Foundation (Miami, Florida. USA) this week visited Kichaka Primary School in Shimoni, Mombasa where they donated footwear to all the students at the school. This was in response to their concern when they learnt of the Jigger infection in the area from the report of the Jaffery Mobile Clinic. The Mobile Clinic was the idea of Dr. Jaffer who saw the need to reach out to those less fortunate in the rural areas of the coast province and provide them with basic healthcare as well as health education.

The complete Mobil Clinic was donated by Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Foundation. Dr. Mohsin conveyed his Foundation's interest to support the Scheme to Mr. Asaf Gulamhussein, Chairman of the Jaffery Medical Board 2 years ago.

The Jaffery Medical Board which operates the Jaffery Medical Clinic in the old town of Mombasa, agreed to take up the offer. Since inception the Mobile Clinic has already attended to 20,800 patients in rural areas of Mombasa, where such facilities are lacking. For ease of logistics, the Schools and Madressas being operated and managed by Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya were identified as stations for the Mobile Clinics and different center is visited once a week. Information about the schedule of the Clinics is sent out through the Bilal Centres.

The current Centres covered are Kichaka, Mkwaju and Shimoni in Msambweni and Burani, Miamba, Moyeni, Bahakanda in Kwale.  In these areas the local population (wananchi) benefit from weekly visits where they are diagnosed and provided with medication. Currently an average of 100 patients per day are attended to at no charge.

It is located adjacent to the Hydery Mosque in the old town and is easily accessible from Makadara road opposite the Central Police Station. The main objective of this clinic is to provide quality healthcare to the entire local community at minimal cost. From humble beginnings, it now offers the following services:

  1. 2 full-time doctors
  2. X ray
  3. Ultra sound
  4. Laboratory
  5. Dental
  6. Pharmacy

These services are provided six days a week (Mon to Sat) with an average attendance of about 50 patients a day. There is a nominal charge for consultation, other services are charged separately well below the market rate for such clinics.  Various medical and laboratory equipment has been donated by various donors, including the Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa.

The recent equipment being the Auto Analyzer for the Laboratory which was donated by The Beta Charitable Trust through The World Federation of KSI Muslim Communities, UK. The clinic operates on a non-profit basis and therefore the day to day running costs also have to be met through donations from well wishers.
