Fazal Alarakhia Khimji – Amongst the Early Pioneers of Tanga (1883-1916)

Fazal Alarakhia, younger brother of Shivji, arrived in Pangani in 1900 after a sea voyage from India. He was 20 years old. Eid-ul Fitr Message from the Chairman of the Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa, Alhaj Shabir H. Najafi

O people! Verily this day of yours is the day when the righteous are awarded and the wretched are losers. It is a day which is similar to the one on which you shall be standing (before your Lord). Therefore, when you come out of your homes to go to places of your prayer, remind yourselves about the day when you (your souls) shall come out of your bodies to go to your Lord. When you stand on places of your prayer, remind yourselves of your standing in presence of your Lord (on the day of Judgment). And when you return to your homes (after prayer), remind yourselves about your returning to your homes in Paradise.

Extract from the Sermon of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (as)
on the day of Eid ul-Fitr

Why are people with diabetes at increased risk for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)?

If you have diabetes, you are more likely to develop Cardiovascular Disease than someone without diabetes.

Types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes - happens when your body cannot make insulin. This type usually affects children and young adults.

Type 2 diabetes - occurs when your body can’t produce enough insulin or the insulin doesn’t work properly. Type 2 diabetes is more common and tends to develop gradually as people get older – usually after the age of 40.

Diabetes is treatable, but even when glucose levels are under control it greatly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. That's because people with diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, may have the following conditions that contribute to their risk for developing cardiovascular disease.
