Ali Rehemtulla of Dar-Es-Salaam and Abida Mustafa Virjee of Arusha are the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year 2010
At the 72ndSupreme Council Session held in Mombasa, the Chairman of the Sports Council of the Africa Federation Alhaj Mahmood Somji on behalf of his Committee announced the names of the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year 2011. This is an annual event, whereby the Sports Council accords recognition to the outstanding persons in sports fraternity, selection is based on several criterions.
Four entries were received for the Sportsman Award, they came from Arusha, Dar-es-Salaam, Mombasa, and Nairobi Jamaats and three entries for the Sportswoman Award, and they came from Arusha, Mombasa and Nairobi Jamaats.
Br.Ali Rehemtulla of Dar-es-Salaam and Sister Abida Mustafa Virjee of Arusha were declared the Sportsperson for the Year 2011. We congratulate them for these achievements.
Ali aged 23 is a member of Union Sports Club of Dar-es-Salaam and plays Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Squash and Badminton. He captained Union Sports Club to two title wins in the year 2010. He also won two Squash Competitions during the year.
He is the Secretary of Union Sports Club since 2009 and was the Convenor of the Ramadhan Sports Festival in Dar-es-Salaam in September 2010. He was a member of the Ashura Juloos Organizing Committee and also took active part in the Kerbala Project in Muharram 1432 AH. He is the Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the Urafiki Sports Festival to be held in Dar-es-Salaam in April 2011.
Abida is a member of Kilimeru Sports Club of Arusha and plays Badminton, Netball, Rounders, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Cricket and Football. She was the winner of the Badminton doubles at the Pamoja Ladies Festival in Nairobi in 2010.
She is the Chairlady of the ladies Anjuman and is a teacher at the Madrassah, and a member of the Saturday Dars. She is also a Committee Member of the Kilimeru Sports Club
